Kit pulled on the chains around Luca’s wrists, dragging him out of the gaol cart and pulling him into a cobbled square. The sun was beginning to fall, casting the castle before them into a dark red light.

“It is the lights of hell. Come to take us all,” Luca whispered.

Kit pulled him forward again, glancing briefly at Iomhar who winced at Luca’s words.

“It is Bamburgh Castle. Not hell,” Iomhar said over his shoulder as he led their path up to the castle.

“Is it safe to hold him here?” Kit asked quietly, glancing back at the pursuivants who stood at the far end of the driveway by the horses, all murmuring amongst themselves. As they clambered up the steep drive, heading to the castle atop the mound that overlooked the ocean, Kit felt a strange disquieting.

“Ye think Catholics could break him free from here?”

“One castle was hiding him. Who is to say there isn’t someone here who will help him?”

“Bamburgh’s dungeons are impenetrable.” Another voice joined them. Oswyn appeared at Kit’s side. Despite his smile, there appeared to be something different in his manner, something that Kit had not seen before. “Aye, pet, you can trust this place. He will not break free of here.”

Kit nodded slowly, looking back to Luca as he trailed behind her. He didn’t even pull tightly on his chains, as if he had already resigned himself to his fate.

With the sky beginning to darken, they were led by the dungeons’ guards around the castle wall, following a stony path that soon meandered down into the recesses of the castle, beneath a cobbled archway and a metal grate. What had been basked in the red sunset before became swathed in a darkness that was as black as night, until torches lit and fastened against the wall appeared in the distance.

Not large enough for two people to walk astride, Kit led Luca down the corridor, with Iomhar following closely behind the two of them. When they reached a cell, a barred door was pushed open to reveal a room that was not only clad with thick irons to prevent escape and no windows, but all manner of evil-looking instruments. Kit froze when she laid eyes on them.

“Walsingham has not authorised torture. Has he?” she asked, looking back at Iomhar and Oswyn.

“Nay,” Iomhar agreed, taking the chains out of her hands and moving to fasten Luca to the wall with fresh chains.

“It will only be a matter of time.” Oswyn’s words made Kit shift and step further back in the dungeon, moving away from the instruments. There was one that was made of nothing but sharpened sticks, in such a way that she wasn’t even sure how a body was supposed to be flung across it. Beside it, there was a table, complete with thumbkins and other small devices designed to be applied to the body.

Behind Luca, the dungeon was made mostly of hollowed out stone, with wooden boards across the ceiling, so low that they nearly touched Iomhar’s head.
